In a recent tweet, by the Philippines’ Commission on Elections (COMELEC) Commisioner Rowena Guanzon appeared to be threatening to use her position to disadvantage Filipinos she perceives to be supporters of the Philippine National Police (PNP) in the next elections.
Guanzon is suggesting that she will bring to bear the power of the COMELEC to deputise the PNP and issue gun exceptions to get back at the “trolls” who are presumably challenging her points of view on social media. This is a dangerous attitude exhibited by an officer of the country’s most important democratic exercise.
Indeed, recall in 2016 how Guanzon rescued vice presidential candidate Leni Robredo from imminent disqualification for failure of her party to comply to COMELEC rules. Even back then, it was crystal clear that Guanzon was partial to the Liberal Party (a.k.a. the Yellowtards).
It seems Guanzon still hasn’t grown up since that debacle that severely eroded Filipinos’ trust in the integrity of the COMELEC. The blatant partisanship of Guanzon makes her unfit to be COMELEC chairman. She should step down as COMELEC Commissioner.
